The RMT union has called for strike action at Go Cornwall unless the bus company recognises it for collective bargaining. While many staff at the operator are members of the Unite union, the RMT says it is being denied the same recognition.
The RMT announced that its members voted for strike action and action short of strike action as Go Cornwall continues to refuse to recognise the union.
RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said Go Cornwall should accept the result of the TUC Disputes Committee verdict from January. He said: "It is time Go Cornwall respected the democratic choice of the whole workforce by creating a united bargaining structure that genuinely protects every driver and depot worker." He added: "RMT has been organising transport workers in Cornwall for over one hundred years and this workforce deserves the right to representation."
Richard Stevens, managing director for Go Cornwall Bus, said the company is not a party to that TUC process. He said: "It is important to be clear that this dispute is not about pay, terms and conditions, pensions or workplace safety. Employees at Go Cornwall already benefit from recognised independent trade union representation through existing collective bargaining arrangements. The issue in dispute is whether trade union should hold formal collective bargaining rights within the business."
