A car fire on the M5 caused traffic queues this evening. A witness reported the incident on the M5 southbound near Tiverton Junction (J27) at 5.20pm on Monday, September 21. A video sent to DevonLive showed the vehicle on the hard shoulder engulfed in flames and smoke. The witness said police were at the scene slowing traffic down. Traffic later eased after 6.30pm once the fire had been put out. The M5 is no longer experiencing delays due to the earlier car fire. The fire service confirmed the vehicle was 100% damaged in the fire, and the cause was deemed accidental.
Inrix said at 6.38pm: "Traffic returned to normal, earlier vehicle fire on M5 Southbound from J27 A361 ( Tiverton ) to J28 A373 Honiton Road ( Cullompton / Service Area)."
A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "A vehicle was well alight on the hard shoulder between junctions 27 and 28. We sent two appliances and extinguished the fire using hose reel jets and breathing apparatus. The vehicle was 100% damaged by fire."

The traffic monitoring service said at 5.58pm: "Queueing traffic on M5 Southbound from J27 A361 ( Tiverton ) to J28 A373 Honiton Road ( Cullompton / Service Area)."
