Lower Union Road, just off the A379 in Kingsbridge, was closed in both directions after a large fire broke out in the early hours of this morning, Saturday August 29.
Eight fire crews were dispatched to tackle a blaze at an industrial unit in the South Hams town about 4.30am. They arrived to find the unit "well alight". People living nearby were warned to keep their windows and doors closed to avoid inhaling smoke billowing from the fire.
The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service posted on X at 4.30am: "We currently have eight fire crews dealing with a fire at an industrial unit in Lower Union Road, Kingsbridge. Please keep your doors and windows closed due to the smoke."
A final update on the incident was issued shortly before 10.45am, when the fire service posted: "This was a fire in a two-storey commercial property, the middle industrial unit of a row, which was 80% damaged by fire and 100% damaged by smoke. Neighbouring units were inspected and suffered superficial smoke and water damage only. Fire crews used seven BA sets, two hose reel jets, two safety jets, one attack jet, and an aerial ladder platform. Accidental cause. These are the final details."

Incident being scaled back to four pumping appliances, crews remain on scene to dampen down hotspots.
Crews have prevented the fire from spreading to the two adjacent industrial units. Firefighting still taking place to prevent escalation.
