A fire at Sidmouth has destroyed a bungalow.
The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called to Yardelands following reports of a ‘significant fire’ at around 3pm.
In an update on Monday, September 21, crews confirmed the building suffered 100% damage. The occupants got out safely before the emergency services arrived.
Six fire engines were sent, with some firefighters remaining to dampen down any hotspots.
A witness said she saw the roof “burned down” after picking her son up from college. She said: “I turned into Yardelands and saw the huge cloud of smoke, neighbours rushing out onto the streets, making phone calls. Then I quickly pulled onto someone's drive to let the fire engine go past. At that point I could see smoke coming through the roof and flames flickering at the back of the house.
“By the time I walked to get my son, the roof was burned down and more fire engines turned up. “
There were reports of traffic delays on Sidford Road. Police were understood to be in the area directing traffic and people. Residents were advised to keep their doors and windows closed because of the smoke.
A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “Unfortunately, the bungalow has been 100% damaged by fire. The occupants were able to leave the building safe and well before our arrival. We still have six appliances and an aerial ladder platform at the scene knocking back hotspots.”
