Perranporth Beach is a beloved destination for Cornwall visitors, drawing families, surfers and dog walkers to its striking Atlantic shoreline. The beach features a sweeping expanse of golden sand framed by dramatic cliffs and dunes, extending approximately three miles along the coast.
When the tide recedes, the sand connects with adjacent Perran Sands, forming a remarkable stretch for visitors to discover. Yet Perranporth offers far more than just its sandy beach, with the location deeply connected to St Piran, Cornwall's patron saint.
Within the surrounding dunes lie the remnants of St Piran's Oratory, commonly referred to as the "lost church", thought to originate from approximately the sixth century.
Perranporth also holds a distinctive position in British surfing heritage. Local resident Tom Tremewan is recognised for crafting some of the nation's earliest surfboards during the early 20th century, with accounts indicating he fashioned the boards from coffin lids, reports the Express.
The beach has earned recognition as among the most "beautiful" in the UK, according to Tripadvisor reviews left by past visitors. Experts at Iglu Cruise analysed data from Tripadvisor, examining the highest-rated beaches with more than 1,000 reviews each, ultimately naming one as "the most beautiful" in the UK, with Woolacombe also making the top 10.
The team at Iglu said: "Perranporth Beach in Perranporth, Cornwall, England is the sixth highest-rated beach in the UK. The beach is owned and managed by Perranzabuloe Parish Council but is free to use for both locals and visitors.
"Surrounded by rolling dunes and tall cliffs, the vast sandy beach has something for everyone, whether that be swimming, snorkelling, riding horses or just taking in the fantastic views."
The golden sands extend for three miles, offering breathtaking vistas of the Atlantic Ocean.
The resort boasts all the traditional features of a quintessential British seaside destination, including a pub positioned directly on the beach. The Watering Hole bills itself as the UK's "only bar on a beach" and is located right on the sand.
One visitor shared their experience on Tripadvisor, stating: "Perranporth is a stunning place. The beach is beautiful and we didn't want to leave. It's the perfect place to relax and unwind.
"The beach is picture perfect and it's a jewel in Cornwall's very impressive crown. The town is a delight and all the amenities are there. Nice pubs and cafes are dotted all around to cater for all. The beach is simply the cherry on the cake."
The beach has garnered particular appreciation for being dog-friendly, making it a perfect spot for families with four-legged companions.
Another visitor commented: "We visited the beach as it's dog-friendly…our dog loves the beach and to be able to run around. The tide was out when we visited, so the beach was quite vast. No idea what it's like when the tide is in.
"The beach is clean, and there is a cafe on the beach so you can sit and enjoy a drink whilst people watching and watching our dog run around. Everyone we met was friendly, and all the dogs we saw seemed to be having a great time."
