Devon and Cornwall are famous for their coastline, but neither county has a beach in the top five of a new UK ranking. The list was compiled by luxury holiday company The Thinking Traveller, which looked at Tripadvisor ratings and average air and sea temperatures during the busiest months. Beaches from Kent to Scotland made the cut, with the company praising the "array of natural beauty and outstanding coastal experiences" around Britain. A spokesman said: "Whether you prefer a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere or a peaceful, scenic escape, there’s something for everyone on this list."
The five beaches are listed below, from fifth to first.
Sea Palling in Norfolk came fifth, with a Tripadvisor rating of 4.7 out of 5. Its average peak air temperature is 19C, and the sea averages 16.8C. The beach has soft sand, dunes and sheltered water created by offshore reefs. Its calm conditions make it popular with families, swimmers and those after a quieter day out. A spokesman said: "Sea Palling beach is the UK's fifth-best beach, combining a high rating score (4.7 out of 5) with mild air (19C) and sea (16.8C) temperatures during peak months."
Embleton Bay in Northumberland took fourth. It offers a long stretch of sand backed by dunes and clear views of Dunstanburgh Castle. The castle ruins stand above the coast and make the beach one of the area's most recognisable spots. It is popular for walking, wildlife spotting and quieter seaside trips, especially for those who prefer natural surroundings over busy attractions.
St Andrews West Sands was third and the only Scottish beach in the top five. Located near the historic town of St Andrews, it has a large area of sand with room for walking, running and family activities. It is known for appearing in the opening scenes of Chariots of Fire. Visitors get views across the North Sea, while the town offers restaurants, shops and historic sights.
Botany Bay in Kent finished second. Near Broadstairs, it is known for pale chalk cliffs, rock formations and a sandy shoreline. At low tide, visitors can explore rock pools and walk further along the beach, but they should watch the tide and avoid standing under the cliffs. Its distinctive setting has made it popular with families, photographers and anyone wanting a scenic alternative to Kent's busier resorts.
Sandbanks in Dorset was named the UK's best beach, beating every destination in Devon and Cornwall. It has a Tripadvisor rating of 4.6 from 1,919 reviews and an average peak air temperature of 20.8C. Its fine sand, clear water and views across the Dorset coast make it one of the country's best-known seaside spots.
