Police have confirmed that a man rescued from a house fire in Braunton has died in hospital.
Devon and Somerset Fire Service were alerted after smoke was seen coming from the ground floor of a semi-detached house in Abbotts Hill, Braunton, at about 3.50pm on Wednesday, September 16. A crew from the nearby Braunton fire station was initially sent to the scene, along with firefighters from Barnstaple and Woolacombe stations.
By around 4.21pm crews were using two breathing apparatus, two high pressure hose reels and a 45ml jet to tackle the blaze, later increasing to four breathing apparatus, three hose reels and the 45ml safety jet. The service said the fire was confirmed as out by 4.29pm, with the ground floor suffering 100 percent smoke damage and 50 percent fire damage. The upstairs also suffered smoke damage.
In its initial statement, the fire service said: "The occupier of the property has been rescued and is in the care of the ambulance service". The man later died.
This afternoon, a spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "A man has died following a fire at a property in Abbotts Hill in Braunton yesterday evening [Wednesday 16 September]. Emergency services attended the incident and the man was taken to hospital where he later died. The death is not being treated as suspicious and has been filed for the coroner. The man's next of kin have been informed."
