Two live-in carers have been jailed for defrauding a wheelchair-bound pensioner who was grieving the loss of her husband.
Sharon Kasuto and Uaepa Mbunga stole £5,400 from the 83-year-old woman using her bank cards over a six-week period. The woman lived in Redruth and the pair were paid to look after her.
A sentencing hearing at Truro Crown Court last week heard that the victim was wheelchair-bound after a fall, and her husband died while the two carers were employed. His Honour Judge James Adkin said they "systematically stole" from an incredibly vulnerable and grieving woman. The fraud took place between November 4, 2022, and November 25, 2022.
Judge Adkin said it was an abuse of trust and that the jail term he imposed must act as a deterrent to people paid to care for elderly people.
Kasuto, 37, of Doncaster, and Mbunga, 38, of Barnsley, are both mothers of one. They were convicted by a jury on two counts of fraud by false representation in connection with the incident in November 2022.
The victim said she now struggles to trust people and was caused upset and stress while grieving for her husband.
Kasuto and Mbunga were each jailed for two years and have been warned they will be deported after serving their sentences.
