Devon farmers are being urged to review their security measures as autumn and winter bring shorter days and longer nights, which create more opportunities for rural criminals.
With farms quieter during the darker months, the advice is not to become complacent and to take simple steps to protect machinery, fuel, tools and other valuable equipment. Tractors, trailers, quad bikes and machinery attachments are among the assets that can attract thieves.
Devon & Cornwall Police advise storing equipment inside secure buildings wherever possible, rather than leaving it in fields or remote areas overnight. Keys should be removed from machinery when not in use, and immobilisers and tracking devices can offer extra protection. High-value equipment should also be kept out of sight where practical.
Farmers are also encouraged to check access points around their land. Gates that are rarely used should be locked, chained or blocked to stop unauthorised vehicles entering fields and farmyards. Boundary fences and field entrances should be checked for weaknesses, with measures taken to restrict vehicle access where possible. Reducing access can make farms less attractive to offenders and give farmers more time to respond to suspicious activity.
Good housekeeping can also help prevent rural crime. Tools, generators, GPS equipment and fuel containers should be secured rather than left in yards or unlocked buildings. Fuel tanks should be regularly checked and protected with locks, particularly during periods when they are used less frequently.
Farmers are being asked to remain vigilant and report unfamiliar vehicles or people showing an unusual interest in machinery, livestock or access routes. Non-emergency incidents and concerns should be reported to 101, while 999 should be called if a crime is in progress.
