A young man who was orally raped at a party has described the trauma, fears and mental health struggles he still faces, after his attacker was jailed.
Dean Nash, an alcoholic, had been drinking since the morning at the social event in south east Cornwall in April 2022 when he sexually assaulted the young man sleeping on the couch during a sustained attack.
Nash orally raped the teenager and tried to rape him in another way, which a sentencing hearing at Truro Crown Court today (Tuesday, September 15) heard had been as a "punishment" for something that had happened earlier in the day.
The 43-year-old from Albany Road in Redruth was convicted of one count of oral rape, one of sexual assault on a male and another of attempt to rape a boy at trial at Truro Crown Court last month.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, Nash's victim said the last few years had been very difficult, especially for his mental wellbeing. He said he had been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), was on daily medication, and still struggled to understand why anyone would do this to him.
The victim said the sexual assault had left him feeling scared of going out in his own town, which is why, when his family decided to move away, he jumped at the chance to do so.
He also said he had been left feeling an "irrational fear" of public transport and of men, adding: "I have lost my trust in men because I fear they have hidden agendas."
Nash's victim said he had been feeling strong until the trial, but when it came to giving evidence he had been "petrified" for fear that the jury would not "hear my truth".
"The verdict was what I had hoped for," he added. "It showed that speaking up was the right thing to do.
"Now I want to move on from this chapter in my life. I'm going to flourish into the person I was always meant to be regardless of my past."
Rupert Taylor, in mitigation for Nash, said he is an alcoholic and his condition, albeit self-inflicted, will make it harder for him in prison.
His Honour Judge Simon Carr said Nash had carried out a sustained sexual attack on his victim, who was vulnerable at the time, as a "punishment" for something that had happened earlier in the day during the party which he had taken umbrage to.
Judge Carr said Nash has relevant previous convictions and is alcohol dependent but has done nothing to address his issues. He said the impact of Nash's actions on his victim will be felt for the rest of his life.
He sentenced Nash to a total of seven years in prison. He will be placed on the sex offenders' register for life. Judge Carr also imposed a restraining order not to contact his victim for life.
