Police have launched a murder investigation after the body of a newborn baby girl was found in Sheffield.
Officers were called to a flat in the Wincobank area at 5.58am on Sunday following reports of a concern for a baby's safety. They searched a property on Holywell Heights, where the baby girl was discovered. Despite paramedics' efforts, the infant was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Seven people have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody, police said.
On Monday morning, police vehicles were seen in the area, with a cordon near the flat. Forensics officers were also at the scene, and police were seen combing the nearby area, reports Yorkshire Live.
In a statement on Sunday, South Yorkshire Police said the baby was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of officers and paramedics. They confirmed the seven arrested remain in police custody.
Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Emma Knight said: “We are aware news of this will be deeply concerning and I want to reassure our local communities that we have a dedicated team of detectives and officers hard at work to ensure justice is secured for the baby girl at the heart of this investigation.
“As part of our investigation seven people have been arrested on suspicion of murder. All of them remain in police custody at this time. We are working to determine the ages of some of those arrested.
“Our investigation is in its early stages and we would like to remind people to avoid speculating about this incident.”
