Met Office Lists 19 Devon Towns Facing All-Day Rain on Friday

The Met Office has named the 19 Devon towns expected to be soaked by heavy rain on Friday, with wet conditions forecast throughout the day.

Temperatures will stay cool for this time of year, reaching 20C in Exeter, while the rest of the county sees highs in the high teens. The cool weather is matched by similarly unseasonal rainfall, as meteorologists believe it will rain all day in the south west.

The Met Office forecast for the UK is: “Sunshine and showers again on Friday, though showers easing from the north into the weekend to become mostly fine with sunny spells. Winds generally easing.”

Weather maps show a large swathe of rain moving in from the Atlantic and making landfall in Cornwall in the early hours, before moving eastwards towards Devon shortly before 5am. The band moves slowly northwards and could dump two inches of rain between 7am and 9am around Barnstaple, charts show.

The wet weather continues as the morning progresses. Although the areas covered by clouds do not diminish, the amount of rainfall they deliver does.

By lunchtime, only light drizzle will cover most of Devon, although heavy rain could be seen near Teignmouth. While it might seem the rain is fizzling out, it actually appears to get heavier for most around 2pm. The heaviest downpours hit Salcombe around this time.

Heavy rain dropping up to 8mm of water in an hour will continue until the evening in inland areas, and around Okehampton and Plymouth.

The rain will finally stop at around 10pm for most. Happily, Saturday looks like it will be a lot drier.

The 19 major Devon towns set to see rain on Friday, August 21, are:
