Fire crews remain at the scene of a blaze in a block of flats in Liskeard.
Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Liskeard, Bodmin, Lostwithiel and Looe were called out at 18:38 BST on Wednesday and used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to tackle the fire.
Resident Andy Field said firefighters had to remove roofing tiles during the operation.
He said the flats on Catchfrench Crescent were home to young families and single people. He added: "We have all been evacuated 20 to 30-metres from the damage."
