Hay-Lorry Fire Closes A303 in Devon as Blaze Reaches Verge

A major route through the South West is shut tonight after a hay-laden lorry burst into flames.

Emergency services were called to the A303 after an HGV carrying hay bales caught fire. The road is now closed in both directions.

Fire crews are tackling the blaze, which spread from the HGV to the grass verge between the A358 at Ilminster and the A30 at Upottery. A separate closure has also been reported from Giant’s Grave to the Marsh turn-off in Somerset.

Drivers are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys as emergency services work to bring the incident under control.

On X, National Highways South West posted: "The #A303 in #Devon is closed both directions between the #A358 #Ilminster and #A30 #Upottery after a hay-laden HGV caught fire, with flames spreading to the grass verge. Fire crews are on scene tackling the blaze."
