A city centre Post Office is looking for a new home after the shop it sits in prepares for closure. Truro Post Office is currently located in the TG Jones store on Pydar Street. TG Jones announced back in May that some 150 of its 480 high street stores would be closing as part of a restructuring plan.
The Truro branch is among them and is set to close on October 6. According to the BBC, the Post Office said the vacancy for a replacement branch had been advertised and it was in the early stages of reviewing the applications.
Steven Webb, Cornwall Councillor for the Moresk and Trehaverne ward, said he would be "fighting to keep the service in the city". He added: "Truro needs a full service Post Office on the high street, and it needs to open before this one shuts."
The nearest Post Offices are at Trelander just under a mile away (1.2km), or Shortlanesend, about 2.1 miles (3.3km) away. Mr Webb said the alternative branches did not offer the same services such as passports, car tax or travel money.
A spokesperson for the Post Office said: "We fully recognise the challenging trading conditions that TG Jones and many other High Street retailers are facing at the moment. TG Jones had its Restructuring Plan approved by the High Court on 1 July, which includes seeking new commercial terms with landlords for the majority of their estate. Consequently, TG Jones is closing their Truro store on Tuesday 6 October. We know how important our products and services are to the local community."
