A suspected Second World War bomb has been removed from Falmouth Docks and will be taken out to sea for disposal. The device was found within the dock area on Monday afternoon (September 21). Explosive Ordnance Disposal believe it is a 250lb (113kg) American air-dropped bomb from the Second World War.
Devon and Cornwall Police set up an initial safety cordon of 300 metres, and several households were asked to evacuate their homes this morning (Wednesday, September 23). Members of the public and boat users were also told to stay away from the area.
Yesterday it was announced that a 1,400-metre cordon could be needed for the removal, which would have required the evacuation of over 1,300 homes. That plan has since been revised. Cornwall Council said the cordon would be extended to 755m, with 220 addresses falling within the zone and being asked to evacuate. Teams visited affected properties to advise people on what to do and provide information about where to go, the council said.
