A suspected unexploded World War Two missile is to be moved from Falmouth Docks for disposal, though the exact time of the move has not yet been confirmed.
The object, believed to be a 250lb American missile from the Second World War, was found in the water near the dock area on Monday, September 21.
A 150 metre cordon covering land and sea was initially established, and was later expanded to a 300 metre cordon. Three residential properties were evacuated, and more locals say they have been told they cannot return to their homes. Members of the public have been advised to avoid the area.
Falmouth Harbour and Balaena Falmouth have issued a Notice to Mariners stating that the object will be removed for disposal at an unconfirmed time. The notice also says water users "must keep well clear" of the exclusion zone.
The notice said: "Notice is hereby given that an unidentified object, suspected of being an unexploded ordnance, has been found in position 50° 09.059’N 005° 02.798’W.
"An exclusion zone of 300m has been enforced. All water users must keep well clear of the exclusion zone.
"The object will be moved for disposal, time of moving is yet to be confirmed, but will be announced on VHF 16 by the Coastguard. Port users should listen to VHF 16 for further updates from the Coastguard."
Superintendent Vicky Howell, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said yesterday: "We have extended the cordon around Falmouth Docks following the discovery of a suspected unexploded ordnance device.
"Specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers are on the scene and we are working closely with our partner agencies to manage the incident safely.
"We would like to thank local residents, businesses and members of the public for their patience and cooperation while this incident is ongoing.
"We ask people to continue avoiding the area and to follow any instructions given by emergency services personnel."
