An unexploded 250kg missile from World War Two is believed to have been found at Falmouth Docks, prompting a 300 metre cordon and the evacuation of homes.
The device was found in the water near the dock area earlier today (Monday, September 21).
Specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts remain at the scene. Devon and Cornwall Police have extended the initial 150 metre cordon, which now covers both land and sea.
They continue to assess the device, which is believed to be a 250kg American missile from World War Two.
Three residential properties have been evacuated, but more locals say they have been told they cannot return to their homes.
Members of the public have been told to avoid the area and follow advice from emergency services and port officials. HM Coastguard have advised boat users to stay away until further notice.
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police added: "Officers are working closely with partner agencies, including Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, the Port Authority and the Harbour Master.
"The public is urged not to approach the area or enter any restricted zones."
Superintendent Vicky Howell said: "We have extended the cordon around Falmouth Docks following the discovery of a suspected unexploded ordnance device.
"Specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers are on the scene and we are working closely with our partner agencies to manage the incident safely.
"We would like to thank local residents, businesses and members of the public for their patience and cooperation while this incident is ongoing.
"We ask people to continue avoiding the area and to follow any instructions given by emergency services personnel."
HM Coastguard said in a statement earlier this afternoon: "A suspected unexploded ordnance at Falmouth Docks has been reported to HM Coastguard.
"Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team, Devon and Cornwall Police, and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service are attending.
"HM Coastguard has issued navigational warnings. Vessels and the public should keep away from the area."
