Around 120 cyclists took part in the first ever Devon Air Ambulance Cycle Challenge on September 12, helping to raise money for the charity's lifesaving work.
The event was held at Winslade Park near Exeter and offered riders three routes through the Devon countryside, ranging from 30 to 100 miles. It was a new addition to the charity's fundraising calendar, supporting its mission to deliver critical care across the county.
Devon Air Ambulance Chief Executive Greg Allen completed the challenging 100 mile route himself. He said: "For a first-year event, the day exceeded all expectations. The atmosphere was fantastic, the feedback from riders was overwhelmingly positive and there was a real sense of community throughout.
"What stood out most for me was hearing why people had chosen to take part. Some riders were challenging themselves, some were remembering loved ones and others had experienced first-hand the care provided by Devon Air Ambulance. Meeting former patients who had returned to support the charity and raise funds was incredibly humbling.
"When you hear stories like that, you're reminded why these events matter. Every rider on the start line was helping ensure we can continue being there for people facing a medical emergency."
Devon Air Ambulance is an independent charity that receives no direct government or NHS funding for its day to day operations. It relies on donations, fundraising and community support to stay operational.
"Events like the Cycle Challenge are about much more than crossing a finish line," said Greg. "Every rider who signs up and every pound raised helps ensure we can continue delivering critical care to people in urgent need across Devon. Whether it's cycling, running, walking or taking on another challenge, getting involved is a fantastic way to support a service that helps save lives every day."
