The cost of renting a home has risen across most of Devon, but one area has seen prices drop. In the year to August 2026, the average private rent in East Devon was £968 a month, according to the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) data. That is 6% more than a year earlier, the largest annual increase in Devon. It also exceeds the 3.8% rise across the UK and the 4% rise across England.
Only Plymouth (4.7%) and Torbay (4.0%) saw increases above the national average over the last 12 months. Rents also rose in Teignbridge (3.6%), West Devon (3.3%), South Hams (3.2%), Torridge (2.1%), Mid Devon (1.3%) and Exeter (0.5%).
One part of Devon has seen rents fall this year. The typical private rent in North Devon is now £846 a month, according to the ONS. That is 0.3% less than in August 2025.

Exeter is the most expensive place to rent privately in Devon. The average home there cost £1,318 a month to rent in the year to August 2026. That compares with £1,012 in South Hams, £1,004 in Plymouth and £968 in East Devon.
Torridge is the cheapest place to rent, meanwhile. The average home there cost £789 a month to rent in the year to August. That is followed by North Devon at £846, West Devon at £846 and Mid Devon at £878.
