Plymouth rents have passed the £1,000 a month mark for the first time this summer. Renting in the city has never been more expensive. Private non-social rents are 4.7% higher on average than a year ago. The typical Plymouth home cost £959 a month to rent on the private market in the 12 months to August 2025. That figure reached four figures in the year to July this year and now stands at £1,004 a month, according to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics.
In August 2021, before high inflation swept through the national rent market, average prices in Plymouth were £754 a month. That means prices have risen by a third in five years. Plymouth's annual increase of 4.7% is higher than the 3.8% across the UK and the 4.0% across England. East Devon is the only area in the county to see rents rise faster than Plymouth, with the average rent there up 6.0% over the last 12 months. One part of the county has seen prices fall this year.
