Traffic on the M5 has been halted in both directions tonight because of an incident. Police have closed both carriageways between junction 27 (Tiverton) and junction 28 (Cullompton). The roads monitoring service first reported the incident at 10pm. It said: "All traffic being temporarily held due to police incident on M5 in both directions from J27 A361 (Tiverton) to J28 A373 Honiton Road (Cullompton / Service Area)."
Multiple sources describe it as a police-led incident. A witness stuck in the traffic said: "No idea what's happened but it looks like a major incident. Ambulances were on scene on the slipway as if they were using that as a triage point as multiple ambulance rushed from scene and parked there before shooting off in direction of Exeter hospital."
National Highways posted on X: "M5 is closed both directions between J27-J28 due to a police led incident. Emergency services are in attendance. There's delays in excess of 20 minutes on the approach with 2 miles of congestion both ways."
