Porthleven to Honour Dambusters Hero Gibson This Weekend

A parade and ceremony will take place in Porthleven on Saturday to honour Wing Commander Guy Penrose Gibson. He was the celebrated leader of the Dambusters Raid and one of Cornwall's most distinguished wartime figures.

Gibson was the RAF pilot who commanded 617 Squadron during the 1943 raid. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his leadership and bravery, cementing his place in Britain's wartime history.

On Saturday, September 19, a special commemorative event organised by the Porthleven Old Cornwall Society will mark the anniversary of Gibson's death in 1944. Attendees are invited to meet at 10am at the doors of St Bartholomew's Church, before joining a parade to The Clock Tower Memorial for a short act of remembrance.

Refreshments will be served afterwards at the Methodist Chapel on Fore Street. Organisers are inviting everyone to come together to remember a true Cornwall hero.
