Changes have been made to traffic management in Torbay after reports of long delays. Torbay Council said measures were introduced on Wednesday following delays caused by gas works in Dartmouth Road, Galmpton on Monday. Highways engineers visited the site and told contractors from Wales and West Utilities (WWU) to make adjustments, including reducing the length of the works area and ensuring signals are operated manually from 06:30 to 20:00 BST from Monday to Sunday. Contractors will monitor traffic during these times and change the light sequence depending on queue lengths.
The council said WWU was carrying out "essential utility works to replace ageing metal pipes with modern plastic ones as part of a major upgrade programme". The work could not be done in the summer and could not be carried out overnight because it would disturb nearby homes. The council said traffic management was needed to keep workers and road users safe, and while there was "never a good time for roadworks" it would work with contractors to keep disruption to a minimum. It advised people to allow more time for journeys, travel at less busy times where possible, and consider car-sharing.
Rolling two-way traffic lights will operate on Dartmouth Road between the junction with Brixham Road and Churston Station for this phase of works until 20 November. Road closures have also been set up at Manor Vale Road, from its junctions with Dartmouth Road to outside No. 3 Manor Vale Road, and Warborough Road, from its junctions with Dartmouth Road to outside No. 18 Warborough Road. This was to "reduce the number of junctions affected by temporary traffic lights", the council said.
