Drivers in Exeter are being warned of diversions on a major route after a gas leak was found. A gas pipe running beneath the road is leaking.
Bonhay Road has been closed at its junction with Edmund Street while crews from Wales & West Utilities handle the leak. The right-hand lane from Exe Bridge North at its junction with Edmund Street has also been closed, and a diversion route has been put in place for drivers.
Motorists are asked to follow the signposts along Frog Street and onto Western Way.
Wales & West Utilities say they are not yet sure how long the work will take, but engineers are working to stop the leak and to make the area safe. They add that, to keep disruption to a minimum, drivers should allow more time for travel and take alternative routes when possible.
Rob Rose, the operational manager for Exeter at Wales & West Utilities, says that while it is important they fix the leak, there are no wider safety concerns and no impact on local gas supplies.
Rob Rose, Wales & West Utilities Operational Manager for Exeter said: "We are working in the Edmund Street area of Exeter to repair a leak on a gas pipe running beneath the road.
"In agreement with Devon County Council and to keep the local community, road users and our colleagues safe while we work, we have closed Bonhay Road at its junction with Edmund Street as well as the right-hand lane from Exe Bridge North to its junction with Edmund Street.
“A short diversion route is in place along Frog Street and onto Western Way. This will be clearly signposted.
“We’re not yet sure how long our work will take. Our engineers are working around the clock, as quickly and as safely as they can to stop the leak and to make the area safe. While we are doing all we can to keep disruption to a minimum, we would ask that people leave more time for travel and to take alternative routes if at all possible.
“While it’s important that we fix this leak now, it does not pose any wider safety concerns and there have been no impact on local gas supplies.
“We would like to thank local people for their patience while we carry out this essential work.”
