A thug boyfriend beat his partner so badly that she was left covered "head to toe in blood", a court heard.
Frederick Walls punched and kicked the woman during a drunken rage.
When police arrived one officer initially mistook the bloodied victim for having bright red hair.
Walls admitted unlawful wounding at Exeter Crown Court and was sentenced to two years and three months.
The 42-year-old, of Tiverton, said he was "ten out of ten drunk" at the time.
The incident happened in May. Walls and the woman had been in a relationship for four months and earlier in the day had attended her grandmother's wake at the Racehorse bar.
She left early due to his excessive drinking and was in bed when he returned home with a friend shortly after midnight.
He started shouting insults at her and threatened to kill her dog, prosecutor Tom Bradnock said.
Walls then subjected her to a sustained attack. He punched her to the face and inflicted more blows when she was on the ground. He stamped on her chest and face, said the prosecutor.
Walls' friend called 999 and police arrived to arrest him. They found a large amount of blood on the floor and walls and in the kitchen.
The victim was treated at hospital. She sustained multiple injuries to her body and face, a broken nose, black eyes, swollen knee and busted lip.
Walls said he couldn't remember anything. He had mixed his drinks with prescribed medication. When shown photos of the injuries he became upset.
The victim said in a statement it was the worst beating she'd ever had and feels anxious, scared and unsafe.
Walls has spent time in jail before for robbery, the court was told.
Michael Brown, defending, said prison was probably the best place for him at the moment as he wants to turn his life around.
Walls will serve 40 per cent of the sentence in jail and the rest on licence. He was given a restraining order banning him from contacting the victim.
