Plans to redevelop the Hotel Bristol in Newquay have been abandoned. Developer Salboy said its proposal for 143 apartments would not go ahead, but it will seek planning permission to demolish the old hotel.
The company said: "Market conditions have rendered the scheme unfundable and hence undeliverable."
Asked whether it would sell the site or submit new plans, Salboy declined to comment, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The original 2022 scheme proposed 200 apartments and a 78-bed luxury hotel over 14 storeys at the Hotel Bristol and neighbouring Narrowcliff Hotel. Locals called it "hideous" and a "monstrosity".
In 2023, Salboy revised the plan to 176 apartments and a 40-bedroom hotel over 10 storeys, which it said would be more in keeping with the area, but that also drew criticism.
A reduced plan for 143 flats over five storeys was eventually approved by Cornwall Council.
