A proposed seafront development in Newquay has been abandoned, meaning an old hotel could be demolished with no plans for anything to replace it.
Developers Salboy said its plans to turn Hotel Bristol into 143 apartments would not go ahead, but it was due to seek planning permission to allow its demolition.
The company said: "Market conditions have rendered the scheme unfundable and hence undeliverable."
When asked whether it would be selling the site or submitting new plans, Salboy said it did not have a comment to make, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Salboy had scaled back the design from its initial 2022 plan for 200 apartments and a 78-bed luxury hotel over 14 storeys at the site of the Hotel Bristol and neighbouring Narrowcliff Hotel. At the time, the scheme was described as "hideous" and a "monstrosity" by locals.
In 2023, Salboy came back with an amended scheme for 176 apartments and a 40-bedroom hotel over 10 storeys, which it believed would be more in-keeping and sympathetic to the area, but this was also met with derision.
It eventually submitted a reduced plan for 143 flats over five storeys which was approved by Cornwall Council.
