Today we are in St Ives as we continue our serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County.
Journalist Andrew Townsend, the author of the book, says: “Our lovely tour around Cornwall has recently seen us visiting Land’s End, Sennen Cove and the Tin Coast. Before that, we had been making our way along the south coast of the county, in the latter stages exploring Mousehole and Porthcurno. For the latest part of the tour, we are heading along the extensive northern coast of Cornwall.”
St Ives, which is served by a most scenic branchline railway, is consistently voted as one of the top holiday places to visit not only in Britain but also in Europe. The beaches, light, air, narrow streets, harbour, seabirds, seals, cottages, views, gift shops and food and drink all combine to create a tempting mix.
The town also has a long association with artists, and in 1993 the Tate St Ives gallery opened, which also manages the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden in the town. The lifeboat station on the harbourside can be visited, and a number of lifeboat stations are positioned around the Cornish coast, with brave crews saving lives every year. Next time, we will be at Carbis Bay, the smaller neighbour to St Ives, which rose to prominence in 2021 when it was chosen as the location for a meeting of world leaders at a G7 Summit.
