Moving along the coast of St Ives Bay, the latest stop on the serialised tour from the travel guide Cornwall Favourites For One And All! is Carbis Bay. The book, written by journalist Andrew Townsend, is book which is also available as an ebook. Townsend says: “Our lovely tour around Cornwall has recently seen us visiting Land’s End, Sennen Cove, Cape Cornwall, the Tin Coast and St Ives. Before that, we had been making our way along the south coast of the county, in the latter stages exploring Mousehole and Porthcurno. For the latest part of the tour, we are heading along the extensive northern coast of Cornwall.”
Carbis Bay, the smaller neighbour to St Ives, became widely known in 2021 when it hosted a meeting of world leaders at the G7 Summit. Even before that, the area was appreciated for its sandy beach and views across St Ives Bay.
The St Ives branchline train, which connects with the mainline at St Erth, stops at Carbis Bay. It also serves the village of Lelant beside the Hayle estuary. A pleasant walk leads from Lelant centre past West Cornwall Golf Club, which has a fine outlook over the bay, to Porthkidney Sands.
That beach, backed by sand dunes, becomes very large at low tide and is one of the West Cornwall beaches where dogs are allowed all year round.
Next time, the tour moves to historic Hayle, whose name means estuary in Cornish.
