Truro City suffered their first league defeat of the season, losing late away to Dorking Wanderers in the National League South.
Playing their second game in 48 hours, Truro conceded a 90th-minute goal from George Francomb. That strike gave Dorking the win and left the Tinners without a point for the first time this season.
After their recent win over Dagenham & Redbridge, Truro hoped to maintain that momentum. It did not happen, and they left Surrey with little to show for their efforts. They could easily have won and taken all three points, but poor finishing stopped them.
A defensive lapse in the final seconds handed the game to the Wanderers, who had also won on Saturday. From a corner in the dying moments, Francomb headed in to secure all three points, a frustrating way for Truro to lose.
Despite the disappointment, Truro should not let this result damage their strong start to the season. They will look to return to winning ways in their next fixture. Manager John Askey was disappointed but pleased with parts of the performance:
“Obviously disappointing, I was pleased with how we played again, and on another day we would have won the game, everything went to plan, we just failed to put the ball in the back of the net, and then switched off in the last second of the game, which obviously is disappointing, but overall I was pleased with the performance.”
With only one day between fixtures, Askey used the opportunity to rotate his squad, which highlighted the depth of his team:
“Obviously with the quick turnaround, only having one day between the games, which is ridiculous, then it is important that we rest one or two, to avoid injuries, as much as anything, but I thought the lads who came in did well and worked hard, it all went to plan apart from the last second of the game.”
Ten points from their opening games is a solid return in the sixth tier. They could and perhaps should have more, as this match showed. If they maintain this form, it could be a positive campaign. Askey added:
“We have deserved to get the ten points, we deserved at least a point today, we are playing against relatively strong opposition, so 10 points is a good return, but today we should have had more.”
Next, Truro host Chesham United, where they will aim to get back to winning ways.
