Cornwall Live readers have heard that Prime Minister Andy Burnham has backed an overnight tourist levy for Cornwall. He said it could become a major new source of funding for the county. During a visit on Saturday, August 15, he said tourists already pay similar charges across Europe and argued it was fair for visitors to contribute towards the services and infrastructure they use.
"I am prepared to look at an overnight visitor levy for Cornwall," Mr Burnham said. "It could be something of a game changer for Cornwall." He added that a few extra pounds on a hotel or Airbnb bill was unlikely to deter visitors and said it was unfair for residents to carry the full cost of services through council tax.
