The A38 was closed in both directions after a wildfire broke out on an embankment next to the road.
Drivers should expect delays on the dual carriageway at Dean Prior, after a fire was reported at around 2.45pm on Monday, August 17.
Traffic monitoring system Inrix reported: "A38 Devon Expressway in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to serious fire and smoke blowing across the road from A384 (Dartbridge Junction, Buckfast) to Rattery Turn Off (Harbourneford)."
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said three fire engines were called to a field fire on the northbound side of the A38 between East Rattery and Lower Dean. The fire had spread to the central reservation.
In a statement, the service said: "Crews are at work using fire beaters and two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading any further. Around 50m x 20m of field is affected, with the fire in the central reservation measuring around 100m in length."

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Emergency services were called to reports of a fire on the verges of the A38 at Buckfastleigh at around 2.30pm on Monday 17 August. The eastbound carriageway is currently closed. The westbound carriageway was closed for a time but has since reopened."
Traffic reports said the A38 Devon Expressway eastbound was closed, with queueing traffic due to serious fire and smoke blowing across the road from B3380 (Lower Dean, Dean) to A384 (Dartbridge Junction, Buckfast). Congestion reached Marley Head Junction, and one lane was also closed westbound at the request of attending fire crews.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said a 100m stretch of the central reservation was on fire. Firefighters were battling a field fire which had spread to the central reservation on the A38 near Dean Prior, with three fire engines at the scene.
