Traffic on the A38 in Plymouth came to a standstill after a serious crash during rush hour.
One witness told PlymouthLive: "Crash before Marsh Mills A38, stand still traffic". They added that police were at the scene and the air ambulance was also in attendance.
Roads and traffic monitoring site Inrix reported the crash at 5.48pm and initially stated that the A38 was closed westbound. Two lanes remained closed as of 9pm on the westbound side. The eastbound side was also closed to allow an air ambulance to land. The incident involves a car and a motorbike, and the extent of the crash is not known at this time.
Inrix later reported two lanes closed and very slow traffic due to the accident, from the B3416 Deep Lane junction to the A374 Plymouth Road at Marsh Mills Roundabout. Travel time was 25 minutes. Traffic was being allowed through in lane three of three, while lanes one and two remained closed.
National Highways said: "The A38 in Devon has reopened westbound between the B3416 and A374 near Plymouth via lane 3. Lane 1 and 2 remain closed for recovery and debris clean up. Delays of 20 minutes and approx. 1 mile of congestion in the vicinity."
The agency said the road remained closed westbound but added that traffic caught within the closure was being released past the scene via lane 3. Inrix then stated that the A38 was fully closed due to the accident, with the air ambulance landing on the carriageway.
