Students living inside a cordon where a suspected unexploded ordnance was found at Falmouth Docks say they are unable to return home.
The device was located within the dock area earlier today. Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers are at the scene.
A 150-metre safety cordon has been set up around the location, covering both land and sea, while emergency services including the Ministry of Defence, Devon and Cornwall Police and HM Coastguard carry out assessments.
Two homes have been officially evacuated and members of the public have been asked to avoid the area.
Two students from Falmouth University said they returned from their lectures but were unable to get back to their homes at this time.
Gretta left university at around 3.50pm to head home but was told by police she could not enter the cordon.
Gretta said speculation began among her friends at around 1pm.
“I’ve just got home from my lecture that finished at about ten to four and just got told by the police that I won’t be able to go back to my house.
"They don’t know when we can go back.
"The latest update I’ve seen is people in cordoned areas like ours are being told to pack bags and leave. Some people said they could pack their bags and leave, but we have just been told that we can’t go back to our house. "
"It's not a great start to the week."
The Coastguard are asking boat users to stay away from the area but Devon and Cornwall Police said there is no information to suggest any wider risk beyond the established cordon.
The public has been urged by police not to approach the area or to enter any restricted zone, adding that more information will be issued when available.
