Lucy Powell's local radio interviews have highlighted three challenges facing Andy Burnham's government in the run up to the next election.
The first is to give people hope about the future while acknowledging the harsh economic reality. Powell, Labour's deputy leader, repeatedly spoke about a "resilient economy" and "green shoots" in the face of "global headwinds". But as numerous presenters pointed out, listeners often say otherwise.
The second challenge is to provide relief on the cost of living while recognising the pressures on public finances. The spiralling price of petrol and diesel came up again and again. Powell was not able to offer any answers, but the repeated questions will have been noted in Number 10.
Finally, the government needs to convince people it is making progress on the issues that matter to them, including small boat crossings. Powell wanted to highlight the work being done to tackle illegal crossings and the fact that the numbers are down. But it is clear that many listeners either do not believe the government or think more needs to be done.
