Historic Ship Inn Vandalised, Owners Heartbroken

Residents have rallied around a Mevagissey pub after vandals threw paint over its windows and walls.

The Ship Inn on Fore Street is a 400-year-old traditional fisherman's pub built in the 17th century. It was designated a Grade II listed building in 1974.

Over the years, rising tides and heavy storms have earned it the description "Britain's most flooded pub". But recently it was struck by a different liquid: white paint.

Posting on their Facebook page, landlord and landlady Noah and Aleks said they woke up "to something absolutely heart-breaking": smashed windows and paint splattered across the entire front of the historic building.

Aleks Earl wrote: "It was devastating to see the pub that we, our amazing team and so many people in this village have put so much hard work, love and energy into, treated like this."

She also feared the culprits had tried to break in, but they were unsuccessful.

However, she said what happened next "reminded us exactly why we love being part of Mevagissey".

Aleks explained: "We cannot thank every single person from the village enough who came out in the pouring rain to help us clean up, support us and pull everything back together.

"People turned up without being asked and simply got stuck in. That kindness and community spirit means more to us than we can put into words.

"We are working closely with the police and St Austell Brewery to establish exactly what happened and identify those responsible.

"For now, we simply want to say THANK YOU.

"Thank you for the messages, the encouragement, the offers of help and for standing behind us. Something intended to upset us has instead shown us just how much support there is around The Ship Inn.

"We won’t let this bring us down. We’ll clean it up, keep moving forward and continue making The Ship a place that Mevagissey can be proud of. From both of us and the whole Ship Inn Team — thank you so much."

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We have been made aware following a report of criminal damage at the Ship Inn, Mevagissey, overnight between Tuesday 1 September and Wednesday 2 September.

"Enquiries into the matter are ongoing."
