A group of women dressed as flamingos will take on a "punishing walk" along the coast to honour their promise to a late friend to continue her legacy of fighting breast cancer.
Laura Plane, a teacher from Plymouth, spent her final years with terminal breast cancer. But before her death aged 37 in 2017, she had raised £80,000 for charity.
Having been told her condition was incurable in 2014, Plane harnessed her "vivacious" spirit to campaign for youth breast cancer charity CoppaFeel!, her friend Claire Ray said.
Ray and other friends have since honoured Plane with a series of charity events, including dressing as pink birds for a 30-mile walk along the South West Coast Path on Saturday.
"Laura raised £80,000 for charity before her death – I hope she'd be proud we're still carrying on her message and still making people remember her," said Ray.
"We're just doing it to make her proud really and honour the amazing life she lived."
Ray said their legacy events started after Plane's death, with a small group of friends – including co-organisers Ray and Jen Brown, Jo Shalders, Rosie Ashforth, and Toria Dauny – taking part in a sponsored space hop.
There have since been events including half marathons and bike rides, she said, with more than 50 women signed up for the Great Flamingo South West Coast Path Stomp on Saturday.
"Laura was absolutely amazing," said Ray.
"At first the doctors said it was just hormones and when it got bad it was too late."
Describing her friend as "vivacious and full of life", she said the quirky nature of the flamingo "embodied Laura's spirit".
"She inspired so many of us to do so many crazy things for CoppaFeel," added Ray.
Plane worked at Stowford Primary School in Ivybridge.
In 2017, following her death, her husband Jon Plane organised for Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl to dedicate their Glastonbury performance of Everlong to her.
Saturday's event will start at Welcombe in Devon, with the goal of reaching Boscastle in Cornwall by sunset.
Ray added: "So many of us have lost friends and family to breast cancer, or been through it ourselves, and that is what keeps us going."
Ray said the route was the "toughest" they had ever taken on and would "test every one of us".
"But we're all walking for someone," she added.
Last year the flamingos walked the 30-mile Saints Way from Fowey to Padstow and raised £20,000.
The women said they were walking for CoppaFeel!, a youth-focused breast cancer awareness charity, because so many of them have been touched by the disease.
