One of Exeter's best known riverside restaurants has announced major changes to its lease and plans for a refurbishment.
On the Waterfront, on Exeter quayside, says a 'very special chapter' in its history is coming to an end.
It says the brewery owners plan to operate the venue and it will no longer be independently run.
The post says: "For the last 20 years, On The Waterfront has been independently run by us. During that time, we’ve made it our own and created the Waterfront you know and love today — from our famous pizzas and cocktails to bottomless brunches, birthdays, live entertainment, Christmas parties and countless celebrations.
"Our lease is coming to an end and Punch Pubs have decided not to renew it. They will be taking On The Waterfront back in early January 2027, with plans to operate the venue as a Managed Partnership after a full refurbishment.
"On The Waterfront isn’t disappearing, but the independently run On The Waterfront that you know and love — including our famous pizzas — will be coming to an end."
It describes the news as 'incredibly emotional for us'. The announcement was made by Chris Billing, who has run the restaurant for six years and worked there for nearly 18 years.
He says he is 'absolutely gutted' by the brewery's decision. The changes won't happen until the end of the year and On The Waterfront is encouraging customers to book for Christmas and enjoy its famous pizzas while they can.
Chris adds in the post: "We’ve still got the rest of 2026 ahead of us — and we intend to make every bit of it count.
"On The Waterfront has been part of Exeter Quay for 41 years, and we know how much this place means to so many people. First dates, graduations, birthdays, Christmas parties, family meals, nights out and sunny afternoons on the Quay — so many memories have been made here."
There has been an outpouring of support in response to the post, many saying they are 'gutted' at the news.
One person wrote: "This is actually devastating, you guys are an Exeter institution! I agree with others, please find another venue to continue your amazing pizzas."
Another said: "This is heartbreaking. Had the pleasure of working here for many years, met some of my best friends and made amazing memories."
