A 44-year-old man from Seaton has been jailed for arming himself with two kitchen knives and stabbing a man as he lay defenceless on the ground.
Daniel Flynn was drunk when he fell over near his home and hit his head in Harbour Road, Seaton, in the early hours of May 31. Two men walking nearby laughed at him.
Flynn then ran back to his nearby flat, armed himself with the knives, and chased the pair down the road.
Exeter Crown Court heard that one of the chased men tripped and fell onto the road. Flynn stabbed him once in the chest before running home.
The man was taken to hospital and treated for his chest wound.
The court was shown CCTV of Flynn shouting that he was going to kill the men.
Flynn's barrister, Mary McCarthy, said he wanted to scare the men. They had also been drinking while watching a football match in a local pub and were looking for somewhere to stay the night.
She said Flynn, a cannabis user, was 'mortified' by what he had done. He suffers from anxiety and depression and did not normally drink alcohol.
Flynn, a gardener, admitted wounding with intent and two counts of possessing a bladed article in a public place. He was jailed for three years.
Judge Matthew Turner said Flynn armed himself with the knives, and the victim, in his 40s, was lying on the road defenceless when he was stabbed.
The judge made no order for compensation or costs.
It was previously reported that the injured man was airlifted to hospital after the stabbing.
Devon and Cornwall Police were called to reports of a serious assault at 1am.
The road was cordoned off, and there was a heavy police presence in the area while enquiries were carried out.
