Artists across Devon will open their studio doors and invite the public to see what goes on behind the scenes. More than 350 artists will take part in this year's Devon Open Studios, running from September 12 to 20. The event offers free exhibitions, workshops, and chances to watch artists at work.
The displays will cover drawing, painting, sculpture, tapestry, ceramics, jewellery, and glasswork. Participants range from emerging talent to seasoned professionals, all eager to share their inspiration and creativity with visitors.
In Totnes, Sarah Burt is one of five emerging artists to receive bursary awards supporting their participation in the event. She is a printmaker inspired by the architecture, landscape, history, and natural beauty of her local area. Sarah uses drypoint print techniques on old Tetrapak cartons donated by friends and family.
Also in Totnes, four experienced potters are exhibiting together in a town centre pottery: Georgi Gilpin of Georgi Makes, Caroline Wakelin of Wild Earth Pottery, Amanda Peters, and Derryck Strachan. They will show a wide range of tableware, including Scandi-inspired colours, playful freeform pieces, functional ceramics, and sculpture for indoors and outdoors.
In Brownston, visitors will find Rachel O'Connell. Marbling is an ancient surface pattern technique that involves flicking inks or paints onto the surface of a water bath. Marbling is on the Red List of Endangered Heritage Crafts, and O'Connell is one of fewer than 20 professional marbling artists in the UK. Using traditional skills and various marbling techniques, she creates contemporary marbled homewares such as lampshades, cushions, tableware, and vessels, plus gift wrap, books, marbled leather goods, and jewellery.
Rose Elliot is in Galmpton. She is an artist and designer specialising in painting on fabric. She moved to Devon after a successful London career creating hand-painted garments for prestigious retailers, celebrity clients, and international customers. Rose took on a dilapidated boat shed and converted it into a studio and gallery overlooking the River Dart. During Devon Open Studios, Rose will share her venue with Allison McSparron-Edwards.
Allison is a portrait artist working in oils, creating paintings that capture the essence of her subjects. Each work reveals a moment, offering a glimpse into the everyday lives of local people, and sometimes animals. Allison worked as a Chartered Accountant and Business Psychologist before deciding to pursue her dream of becoming a full-time artist. Her psychology background is reflected in her desire to capture the essence of the people she meets.
