For more than 200 years, people in Cornwall have relied on our journalists to report on their communities, the region, the UK and the world.
The first West Briton hit the streets on July 20, 1810. Since then, our newspapers have been part of everyday life in Cornwall. Many remember the phrase "it's not true until it's in the West Briton" and recall Thursday being known as 'West Briton Day', with similar affection for sister titles The Cornish Guardian and The Cornishman (did anyone else have THAT bumper sticker?).
In the 21st century, people moved away from these publications as free, instant news appeared online and sales declined. We launched online to keep bringing you the best journalism.
Today, while CornwallLive's journalists still write for those papers, we focus on bringing you all the news you need, around the clock. We are proud to carry on this heritage and serve as custodians of this tradition.
Producing news costs money. We employ reporters, editors, lawyers, IT support and colleagues developing new technology to improve your reading experience, but we no longer have income from a cover price.
So we are entering the next era with the launch of our Premium offering. We believe it is worth it. CornwallLive was named UK's Regional News Brand of the Year 2026, beating websites ten times our size.
This reflects our comprehensive, in-depth coverage. We reported on Athena Learning Trust academy schools for four years before other outlets, including BBC Panorama, picked up the story.
