Villagers who protested in May over a road closure caused by a mine shaft have now praised Cornwall Council for reopening the route weeks earlier than planned.
Around 150 locals surrounded a hole in Troon, near Camborne, on May 30, fearing it would lead to a lengthy road closure that would leave residents stranded and facing unsuitable diversions.
An initial six-month Newton Road closure, until November 27, was imposed while investigations took place. After the cause of the hole was identified, Cornwall Council's highways engineering arm Cormac set a ten-week remediation schedule.
The hole appeared just a couple of weeks after nearby Pendarves Street in Beacon reopened following six months' work to repair a collapse of a 40ft mineshaft. That work had been delayed by a dispute between Cornwall Council and South West Water (SWW).
At the time of the protest, Rachel Goodman of Troon Residents' Action Group said: "I would say to the council this road needs to be fixed very quickly to release the residents of Troon. There are over 900 properties in the village – this is affecting a huge amount of the population and they need to act."

However, she has now welcomed Newton Road reopening on Friday (August 21), weeks ahead of the anticipated date.
Mrs Goodman told CornwallLive: "I have never seen so much action on the village Facebook pages, residents are truly delighted to be able to exit and access Troon without a seven-mile diversion. Cornwall Council Highways have really done the village proud and we are very grateful to have access restored."
