On Wednesday night, people across the South West gathered in fields, on beaches, headlands and city centres. The moon passed across the face of the sun in one of the most anticipated celestial events of the century.
Cameras were raised and eclipse glasses reached for across the region as the afternoon gave way to evening. A striking crescent sun appeared above the South West and across the world.
The region was among the best places in mainland Britain to experience the eclipse. Around 95% of the sun was covered in Cornwall, with similarly deep partial coverage across the wider South West.
We saw families showing up with DIY viewing devices and eclipse glasses they had queued hours for, as they took snaps of the sun slowly becoming a crescent before their eyes in this once-in-a-generation event.
