Mullion Surf Life Saving Club celebrated a milestone week at Holywell Bay after competing in the largest Surf Life Saving National Championships ever held in the UK. More than 2,000 competitors travelled from across the country to take part.
For the first time, the club's youth athletes competed at national level, and they made an impression from the moment they arrived. The competitors went to Holywell Bay "for the vibe", but were soon caught up in the excitement of national-level racing. Over several days they made new friends, gained valuable experience and earned their first championship points, which has inspired them to train harder through the winter and return even stronger next year.
Their efforts earned Mullion 28th place out of 32 youth teams, a proud result for a debut appearance.
Next, Mullion's Nippers had a rollercoaster weekend. Day two brought drama, including a rib ride during a challenging board course and a hospital visit for a sprained arm from the beach flags event. Day three brought calmer seas and ideal conditions, letting the Nippers take on a full schedule of board races, Taplin, Golden Nipper, board relay and board rescue events. Their determination secured 27th place out of 33 clubs.

"And last but not least, the legend that is Nigel Bowden for his patience and understanding, navigating us through our first Nationals. You are amazing. Thank you from all of us."
After their inspiring debut, Mullion's youth members have launched a crowdfunding campaign to upgrade the club's training equipment. Many surf life saving clubs have specialist equipment for young athletes, including race boards, surf skis, swim fins and beach volleyball nets for fitness when sea conditions are poor. Mullion's young competitors were "in awe" of the equipment at other clubs and hope to replace their ageing kit before next year's championships.

The team has shared estimated costs for the items they want to fund. The youth team, made up of Felix, Florrie, Jago, Liam, Liv, Lucy, Oscar, Robben, Theo, Toby and their fellow members, said they hope the community will support their training and help them represent Mullion at national level again next year.
