The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across the whole of the South West, with heavy showers and thunderstorms expected to cause disruption to transport, infrastructure and outdoor activities including sporting events. This follows a similar warning issued on Saturday August 29 for parts of the South West, which was in place until around 9pm that night. The new warning is active until 11pm tonight.
The warning covers parts of the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, North East England, North West England, South West England, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, Wales, West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber. Forecasters anticipate frequent lightning strikes and heavy rain in the affected regions.
A Met Office forecaster said: "Showers, heavy and thundery, will reach southwest England and Wales later Sunday morning, before spreading and developing more widely during the afternoon. Whilst some areas will miss the heaviest showers, where they do occur 10-15 mm of rain is possible in less than an hour, with 30-40 mm possible over several hours, these larger totals most likely for parts of north and northwest England and southwest Scotland. Hail, frequent lightning and, in southern parts of England and Wales, wind gusts of 35-45 mph will be additional hazards. Heaviest showers and thunderstorms will become more isolated later in the evening."
For motorists, driving conditions may be affected by spray, standing water and hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus. Some flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely, and there is a possibility of damage to buildings or structures from lightning strikes. Delays to train services are also possible. The Met Office has warned that short-term loss of power and other services is "likely".
The Met Office advises residents and motorists to consider if their location is at risk of flash flooding, and if so, prepare a flood plan and an emergency flood kit. They also advise checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, and amending travel plans if necessary. People should prepare for power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items. If outside and thunder is heard, find a safe enclosed shelter such as a car, and avoid sheltering under or near trees or other structures that may be struck by lightning.
