A man was attacked and kicked in the head by a gang in Newquay over the weekend.
Police were called to East Street at around 12.30am on Sunday, August 23.
A group of unknown suspects assaulted the victim, kicking him in the head and causing facial injuries. A woman at the scene was also injured.
A family member of one of the victims said: "I'm uncertain whether this was a targeted homophobic attack or random thugs".
Police believe the attack may have been a hate crime. Officers are continuing their enquiries.
A statement from Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We were called at around half past midnight on Sunday 23 August following a report of a man having been assaulted in East Street, Newquay. It is believed the assault may have been a hate crime. Enquiries into the matter are ongoing."
