For centuries, people made pilgrimages to Holywell cave at Holywell Bay to cure their ailments with the sacred spring water. The water drips down into the holy well at the top of the cave and descends through a series of calcareous basins.
The walls of the cave are full of minerals and show up as bright green, red and yellow when lit. However, they will not be lit again for a generation or even more.
The rockfall from Kelsey Head has seen hundreds of tonnes of stone collapse and smother the cave entrance. It may even have crushed it underneath, perhaps preserving it for future explorers.
Many have taken to social media to reminisce about their visits to the cave. One wrote on a local site: "I can’t believe it! it’s my favourite destination for a holiday!" Another added: "Oh my goodness. So sad. I love visiting that well every year I came down."
