A violent man from Exeter has been jailed for biting a wheelchair user on the nose and assaulting a police officer.
Josh Smith, aged 30, had known his one-legged victim, David Frost, for a long time, Exeter Crown Court heard.
On July 28 this year, Smith spotted Frost leaving supported accommodation in Smythen Street and ran towards him. Before Frost could reverse out of the way, Smith punched him several times.
Smith then grabbed Frost and bit him on the nose.
Police were called and found Smith asleep in a car park in Howell Road. He resisted arrest and kicked the door of a police van, causing it to swing into a police officer.
The offences put Smith in breach of a community order given to him for domestic violence offences earlier this year.
Judge Stephen Climie said it left him with no choice but to send him to prison. Smith, of Beacon Avenue, was jailed for two years and five months.
He pleaded guilty to assault by beating, criminal damage to Frost's phone, and assaulting an emergency worker.
The court was told he 'struggles with internal controls' and the assault on the police officer was reckless. He has a background of drug use and believes himself to be autistic.
Judge Climie said: "Back in July one of the reasons you avoided serving more time in prison was because of a mental health treatment requirement, which is something you need to address at some point. You can't do that now."
