Exeter Cathedral has invited its staff to take voluntary redundancy as it seeks to address a "significant" financial deficit.
The cathedral said it was a "challenging time" as it faced "ongoing financial pressures". In an attempt to minimise expenditure, it said it had launched a voluntary redundancy scheme, and "reduced working hours would be considered to prevent compulsory job loses".
It added that a complete review of its property portfolio was to be undertaken after the closure of the Exeter Cathedral School and its subsequent return to the cathedral, along with other reduced rental income.
The cathedral said planned upgrades to its sound and lighting system were being funded independently. The independent charity the Friends of Exeter Cathedral had allocated a specific grant for the upgrade as part of the planned ongoing development and conservation of the cathedral.
